HOW TO GET TO LAS ALPUJARRAS

BY AIR Which airport? There are three airports you can use. Almería, Granada and Malaga. The most common airport used is Malaga as they have the best deals and more frequent flights from the UK. Granada is closer but there are few international carriers that fly direct, normally one has to change at Madrid or Barcelona. Also the prices are not as competitive. Almería airport has arrivals from several European cities but not as frequent as from Malaga. Malaga Airport. Flight information +34 52 823550. Malaga airport is approximately 2 and a half-hours drive to the main market town of Orgiva in The Alpujarras. The best way to get to The Alpujarras is to hire a car from the airport. Much the easiest way is to reserve a sui catabler with your flight tickets and then you will be met at the airport when you arrive. All major car hire companies have an office in the airport. (Do not to forget to bring an up to date driving licence). If you are travelling on public transport there is a train service into Malaga centre where you can take a bus to Granada, MOTRIL or Lanjaron. There is no train service direct to The Alpujarras. |
Directions by road out of Malaga airport.Driving via the coast road (N340) Leave the airport terminal or your hirecar company and follow the exit road. Straight over the first roundabout and take the left hand lane across the flyover direction Malaga. Follow the signs for RONDA DE MALAGA, direction MOTRIL/ALMERIA. This takes you on the motorway around Malaga City centre. Continue on this motorway (E15/N340) until the motorway ends and the main road continues following the road through Nerja, La Herradura, Almuñecar and Salobreña. Approx. 2 km. beyond Salobreña turn off to the north, direction GRANADA N323. travel north for approx.13 km. and then take the second turning right for VELEZ BENAUDALLA crossing a bridge. This turning is approx. 200m. on a dual carriageway so keep in the slow lane. When you have driven over the bridge bear to the left where there are signs for Orgiva, Bubión etc. Follow this road for approx. 16 km. and once you are through a small tunnel take the left turn over the main bridge into the market town of Orgiva and onto your destination. You can also travel via Granada, which can be quicker if longer especially in the summer months of July and August. Driving via Granada. Follow the same direction out of the airport and when you are on the main motorway towards MOTRIL look for the turning to Granada.Follow the motorway until Granada and look for the N323 south, direction MOTRIL. Follow the ring road motorway around Granada and keep going south until the road goes back into single lane.After approx. 37 km. take the turning right towards LANJARÓN and LAS ALPUJARRAS. Follow the signs to Lanjarón and follow through towards Orgiva (approx.17 km in total off the main road). Just as you enter into the market town of Orgiva there is the only turning up to the left towards Bubión etc. Leaving Malaga Airport By train. The train station is outside the international terminal. Take the lift in the arrivals hall to departures. Walk outside onto the upper car level and turn right. Follow the signs over the footbridge to the train station for Malaga City Centre. First train 07.15 then at every 45 and 15 minutes past the hour until 23.45. Journey time approx. 12 minutes. Leaving Malaga Airport By Bus. There is a frequent bus service to Malaga City Centre. The Malaga bus station is situated next to the train station. Once in Malaga there is a fast bus service to Granada leaving 07.00, 08.00, 09.00, 09.30, 11.00, 13.00, 14.00, 16.00, 18.00, 21.00. Here you will have to change to Lanjarón or Orgiva. There are also two buses a day to MOTRIL and Lanjarón 15.30 and 19.30. Granada Airport. This is not an international airport so if you want to fly to Granada you have to fly via Madrid (45 minutes) or Barcelona (1 hour). If you take this option make sure your travel agent books the connection flight. There are not many flights to Granada so you other option once in Madrid is to take either the bus or train direct into Granada. The airport is 12km. from the city centre. There is a bus service from the airport to the city centre stopping at la Caleta, Gran Via, Fuente de las Batallas (in front of the store El Corte Inglés). Times 9.05, 10.00, 14.00(not Saturday or Sunday), 15.05, 19.35. If you do not connect with these times take a taxi. Arriving in Granada. Once you are in Granada you need to get to the bus station situated on the Carretera de Jaén where you need to connect with a bus to Orgiva or Lanjarón depending where you are staying in The Alpujarras. There are only certain buses each day that drive up onto the higher villages in The Alpujarras. Here are the latest bus times from Granada to The Alpujarras. The name of the bus company that you will be using is the Alsina Graells Sur which is the biggest bus company and goes to most destinations in Andalucia. Telephone number for information +34 958 18 50 10. travelling by road from another destination. Follow the directions by road from the Granada ring road heading south toward MOTRIL. If you are coming from the Almería direction along the coast follow the signs to MOTRIL and keep going along the coast road until you see the signs for Granada and head North inland.
