Polopos

Polopos is a mountain village, situated almost directly south of Granada. Five & a half miles to the south is the vast expanse of the Mediterranean, while to the north are the peaks of the Sierra Nevada. This is not a tourist area, and although half a dozen houses are expatriot owned, tourists do not often come to the village.

Polopos is reached by leaving the main coast road at Cortija La Guapa, La Mamola and winding the way up a good tarmac road. The journey takes about 25 minutes by car & new vistas are seen at every bend. There is limited traffic on this road and you will find yourself stopping to take in the scenery & innumerable snaps. The village is a friendly place. There are less than 100 or so inhabitants, but they usually smile & say hello. The main occupation is farming; almonds being the chief crop, followed by vines, figs & other fruit & veg. There is also a sizeable flock of goats & sheep & owing to the hilly terrain, the use of mules is still a way of life.
Various visiting mobile vendors serve the basic needs of the community & there are two deliveries per day of fresh bread. There is a local bar & the wine is good. Shopping can be supplemented by visiting Castell de Ferro and La Mamola, two villages on the coast, which boast supermarkets with fresh meat, fish,& veg. & there are several excellent, inexpensive local restaurants. There is a twice weekly market at Motril & various other markets inland. All along the coast there are stretches of beaches, many coves & inlets & the water is usually calm & crystal clear. Apart from the usual seaside sports you can swim, snorkel, fish, walk, ride a horse, paint, sample the local brew or just laze.
Other main towns of interest to visit within reasonable distance include Motril, Almeria & Granada, the latter having extensive history & sightseeing & there are, of course, the busier seaside resorts of Almuņecar, Nerja & Salobreņa if you require more sophisticated entertainment.

A few words about us...

We are two "creaking gates" who have lived in the Alpujarras for the last nineteen years.
We left North London where we had followed active careers in market research & advertising, and interior decoration respectively and settled in Polopos in 1988.
Our properties to let comprise one holiday cottage which will sleep up to 5 people & B&B at our main house for another 6. Both houses are traditional Granadaian rural dwellings which we have converted & updated comfortably within the local style. Before conversion Casa Cristina was a little house & cuadra & Casa Nicolar was the village forge.
The village which now houses only one hundred or so as opposed to at least a thousand earlier in the last century was a thriving & important place being a local centre for wine production & almond growing. Although now on a smaller scale these forms of farming continue to this day.
Back to ourselves. John Doyle - is the maintenance man, drink pourer, general adviser, dog handler and overall factotum. Kay Johnson, a Londoner at heart, shops, makes beds & food & more or less copes with the general domestic activities required from living in this wild place.
This couldn't be described as an aggressive commercial set-up but it's ideal for anyone who wants to visit the Alpujarras for an interesting but quiet holiday &/or who needs a rest. Ring us, please.
